The Botanical Line

By Chance Revisited

By Chance 2020

By Chance was born of a studio mishap when I knocked dried leaves all over floral portrait test prints on the floor. It was a mess. But, upon closer inspection, I found a lively dialogue about space, form, and imagination as my three-dimensional botanical ephemera encountered their two-dimensional counterparts. By Chance was part of 2020 In a Box: a project from re/vision @ Rhode Island Center for Photographic Arts.

This image inspired a new body of work, “The Botanical Line” for the upcoming Re/Vision Revisited exhibit at Atrium in Providence, opening on February 13th. When shadows from the garden fell on my new bluestone walkway, I saw geologic mark-making and botanical lines engaging in another unique visual conversation. And the more I played with shadows and their shapes, the more I saw a new alphabet of botanical gestures.
