The one and only piece of folk art I own is a little wooden doll whose apron reads “Housework makes you ugly.” Spring cleaning is not my thing. I will obsess over tiny details in my artmaking for days, yet fail to see crumbs on the kitchen floor. But this Spring, in addition to four exhibits in March and April, I am on a spring-cleaning mission. Everything in my house, including my studio, has to be removed for a major renovation project. YIKES!!!!
In this process, I found a bin filled with 25 pounds of leftover fabric from the Marine Heatwave project. A requirement for displaying my kinetic sculptures in public spaces was that the fabric be treated with fire-retardant chemicals. There was no way I could in good conscience put these 25 pounds of duck cloth in the landfill. Fortunately, Retold, a service for recycling sewing scraps, gave me a “good karma” home for my bin of fabric. What a relief… now just a million more things to clear out…
